Meet Dr. Beattie

What is an Orthodontist?

An accredited orthodontist is a dentist who has completed an advanced post-doctoral course, accredited by the American Dental Association, of at least two academic years in the specialty of orthodontics. While in school, orthodontic specialists gain extensive and specialized training that enables them to diagnose, prevent and treat a wide variety of orthodontic problems. This allows orthodontists to provide their patients with professional, personalized treatments, using the latest technology available.

They are the only father-and-son team to both win research awards from the orthodontic association.

Dr. Beattie has published articles on his research for peer-reviewed orthodontic journals; he has reviewed papers presented by other orthodontists for publication in orthodontic journals. He has also been invited to present cases at regional and national orthodontic meetings, and he has given lectures at national dental and orthodontic meetings.

Dr. Jack Beattie Dr. Jack Beattie

Dr. Jack Beattie founded our practice in 1964. He is retired now from active patient care, but he still acts as a consultant to the practice.

Dr. Jack is originally from Bay City, Michigan. He received his undergraduate degree at Michigan State University where he was an All-American swimmer. He then earned his dental degree from the University of Michigan. He received a Master's Degree in Orthodontics from Western Reserve (now Case Western Reserve) in Cleveland, Ohio. For his master's thesis, Dr. Jack won the prestigious Milo Hellman Research Award, an award given annually by the American Association of Orthodontists for the most significant research in orthodontics conducted that year. A note of interest: Dr. John Beattie also won a research award from the AAO for his graduated thesis, 27 years later. They are the only father-son combination to be so honored.

When Dr. Jack completed his orthodontic residency in 1963, the Beattie family (Jack, Ernestine, John, and Jeff, at that time) moved to Orlando. They bought their first house (where Jack and Ernestine still reside) in Winter Park in 1965. John, the oldest son, is an orthodontist who joined the orthodontic practice in 1990. Jeff, the second son, is an oral surgeon practicing in Winter Park and Orlando. Kim, the youngest, is a prosecuting attorney in south Florida. In 2009, Dr. Jack and his wife, Ernestine, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Dr. Jack is well known for his competitive swimming. Over the years, he has won many national and world championships and he holds the world record for his age group in the 50 meter backstroke, a mark he set in Tokyo at the Master's World Championships. Dr. Jack is also well known and well appreciated among his dental and orthodontic colleagues for his many years of leadership in organized dentistry on behalf of dentists, orthodontists and their patients on a local, state, and national level.
